TWO Abergavenny ladies were delighted to attend this year’s Royal Commonwealth Service at Westminster Abbey earlier this week.

Debbie Fields and her daughter Lucinda were special guests at the UK’s largest, annual inter-faith celebration and premier public event to celebrate the Commonwealth.

Whilst in London they got the opportunity to rub shoulders with the the Queen, assorted members of the royal household, and Craig David.

Anthony Joshua, Boris Johnson, and Alexandra Burke were also present. As were Prince Harry and Meghan Markle who were carrying out their last royal duties at the event.

Debbie who has been a volunteer for the Welsh section of the Royal Commonwealth Society for years, told the Chronicle, “The Commonwealth Youth Summit I had organized for March was postponed until October due to the Coronavirus, and so the Chairman of the Society asked me if a guest and I would like to attend this year’s service instead.”

Former midwife and Coleg Gwent tutor Debbie jumped at the chance and invited her daughter Lucinda along for her big day out.

Debbie said, “We had such a lovely time. On the train we also met Mark Lewis Jones. I didn’t know who he was but my daughter told me’s he’s a famous Welsh actor who’s appeared in Star Wars films and Stella. He was a very nice man.”

Debbie added, “Also at the event we noticed the usher on the day had a booming Welsh accent. It turns out he was from Abertillery. We had a lovely time comparing notes on the two Abers together. Just goes to show what a small world it is.”
