THE victim of a team of pickpockets in Abergavenny’s town centre praised local people after would-be thieves were chased down and tackled to the ground during a bustling market day afternoon.
The incident left Mr Roland Jarvis ‘shocked’ but full of consideration for what he called a ‘public effort’ by strangers in quelling the pickpockets.
Mr Jarvis was visiting Abergavenny on a busy market day a fortnight ago when the culprits made off with his wallet.
A local man witnessed the theft and then gave chase as the thieves fled down the street.
“The amazing thing about the incident was the response of so many passers-by,” said Mr Jarvis.
“It was almost as if a telepathic code went through onlookers to say: ‘here’s someone in trouble. Let’s see if we can help.’”
As the two culprits tried to make their escape, Mr Jarvis said other members of the public made efforts to get in the way.
One ‘courageous gentleman’ caught up with one of the duo and tackled them to the ground. He held on despite being kicked and punched by the alleged pickpocket, until police arrived and made an arrest.
“A couple of observers commented afterwards on what a remarkable piece of public co-operation it was,” said Mr Jarvis.
“Some of those present I thanked personally, but I should also express my thanks to those who melted away after the incident was over.
“Such a spirited public reaction merits great praise, and so to all those present I say very many thanks; your help, however seemingly insignificant, was greatly appreciated,” he said.
A police spokeswoman, said, “At approximately 15:35pm on Tuesday 10th January 2017 we were called to a report of a theft that is believed to have occurred between High Street and Frogmore Street in Abergavenny.
“The money reported to have been stolen was later discovered by a member of the public and has been returned to the victim.
“A female was arrested and following enquiries no further action has been taken against her in relation to this incident at this time.”
Advice to shoppers
Gwent Police say that incidents of pick pocketing and theft are relatively low, but officers have put together some top tips to help you make sure that you and your personal belongings stay safe:
1.When you are out shopping, remember to close and zip shut your handbag in between accessing your purse. When returning your purse to your bag, make sure that you put it at the bottom of your handbag. That way, if you do forget to fully shut your bag, your purse will be difficult for someone to find easily.
2.Keep your handbag close to you at all times, preferably with the strap across your body.
3.If someone grabs your bag - let it go. The bag and its contents can be replaced.
4.Gents; don’t keep your wallet in your back pocket, as it can be easily pinched.
5.Remember to keep you credit and debit receipts safe when you are shopping, as some may contain card details.
6.Getting stressed shopping? Don’t leave your purse, wallet, keys or mobile phone in a basket, trolley, or at the checkout - check, and double check that you have them in a safe place.
7.When catching a bus or train, have your ticket, pass or change ready in your hand so that your wallet is out of sight.
8.If you use your mobile phone in public, watch who is around you. Don’t make it an easy target for mobile phone thieves.
9.Avoid walking home whilst you are speaking on the phone or listening to music, as you won’t hear people approaching.
10.Record your phone’s IMEI number - you can find it behind the battery, or by typing in *#06# into your handset. You’ll need it to cancel your phone if gets lost or stolen.
Beware of creeper thieves
Officers in Blaenau Gwent are reminding residents to be vigilant and ensure their homes are kept locked and secure, especially overnight, following a number of break ins in the area.
Over the last week three homes have been targeted on Chapel Road in Blaina, and Hatter Street and Clydach Street in Brynmawr.
DC Gareth Jenkins said: "Unfortunately we are continuing to receive calls from local residents reporting that their properties have been entered, more often than not overnight. In the majority of cases windows or doors had been left insecure, so these incidents could have easily been prevented.
"I’m urging Blaenau Gwent residents to ensure that all doors and windows are kept locked and secure at all times, and that items such as keys, handbags, wallets and phones are kept out of sight.
"Officers are investigating these break ins and proactively targeting the areas affected. In the meantime, please remain vigilant and take all the precautions you can to keep you and your property safe - don’t make it easy for thieves."
If you see any suspicious activity in your area please call 101, if you believe a crime is in progress please call 999.
