POLICE are warning residents to keep a closer eye on their property and report any suspicious activity immediately after a spike in reported burglaries throughout the area.

As the better weather approaches, officers are urging residents not to become complacent by leaving any windows and doors open after five properties in Monmouthshire fell foul of criminals last week.

On April 17 a property in Skenfrith was burgled when offenders forced open a door, made an untidy search and stole a watch.

On the same day the door of a caravan in Grosmont was forced open and approximately £150 in cash and a money pot containing around £130 in change taken.

During the offence an iPad, a red jacket, a ’Giant’ mountain bike along with a quantity of jewellery including Pandora bracelets with charms and earrings was also stolen.

A further two properties were also broken into in Llangattock Lingoed and on Monmouth Road in Abergavenny where again doors were forced although in both cases it has not yet been determined what was stolen.

A home in Llanfair Kilgeddin was also targeted although no entry was gained.

Police Sergeant Stephen James said: "We are currently investigating each reported crime and asking residents to secure their property. Extra patrols have now been put in place by officers but I also want remind residents to double check their security and please report any suspicious activity immediately by calling Gwent Police on 101 or if you see a crime taking place, call 999.”
