ABERGAVENNY Squash Club's season got off to a flyer with an excellent win on the road against Newport Juniors.

Due to teething problem with Newport's new lighting system, there was a delayed start but that didn't prevent the 'C' team led by Tim Woodier coming away with an impressive victory by four matches to one.

Tim Woodier (ranked one) won 3-0; Jiwan Gahunia (two) won 3-1; Mitchell Lawrence (three) lost 3-2; Simon Cave (four) won 3-0; and Matt Thomas (five) won 3-0.

All the team performed admirably, and nobody will forget the effort of Mitchell Lawrence, who fought back from 2-0 down to gain two extra points for his side.  The experience of Jiwan Gahunia stood him in good stead, being over 40 years older that his opponent, but still turning in a winning performance!

Following the 'C' team's excellent win, the 'B' team, led by captain Chris Phelps, went one better on Tuesday with an excellent 5-0 away win at Bedwelty.

Gareth Hughes-Jones (ranked one) won 3-0; Mike Logan (two) won 3-0; Gary Lawrence (three) won 3-0; Chris Phelps (four) won 3-1; and Ellis Lawrence (five) won 3-1.

Unfortunately the 'C' team's first league match at home was a complete reversal of the previous game's result with Mitchell Lawrence running out as the only winner ( 3-1).

Tim Woodier (3-1), Jiwan Gahunia (3-0), Simon Cave (3-1) and Matt Thomas (3-2) all lost their respective matches.
