Abergavenny Town FC - 3

AC Pontymister - 1

ABERGAVENNY Town who have rattled in 49 goals in nine league outings since the start of the season, extended their lead at the top of the table to six points over second placed Blaenavon Blues.

Heading into Saturday's clash against AC Pontymister missing two influential members of the side in James Hughes and hot shot Dan Jenkins, Town knew it would be a difficult task against an in-form Pontymister, and it took a wonder goal in the second half to seal the win.

Before that Jamie Laurent was first to the ball in a goalmouth scramble to edge Town ahead after 20 minutes. Dean Morgan put his side further ahead with a trademark run which ended when he slotted past Pontymister's 'keeper Craig McLaughlin.

Pontymister, who had arrived at Pen-y-Pound in second place in the league, showed they had not claimed this spot for nothing and as half time approached scored from the spot to give the game a different complexion.

It was half way through the second half when Laurent showed his class with a goal which brought warm applause from the Pen-y-Pound crowd, which at just under 100 heads, is growing each week.

Finding himself wide out on the right wing and fully 35 metres from goal Laurent let rip with a shot which zoomed over the head of McLaughlin and into his net at the far post. More chances followed, for both sides, and at the final whistle Town were happy to claim all three points.

On Saturday, Town travel to last season's champions, Pill AFC (3.00).

AFC Porth - 1

Monmouth Town - 3

GOALS from Chris Ham, Nick Harrhy and Eliot Evans were enough to take all three points for the Kingfishers in a lacklustre game at Porth's Dinas Park.

The home side had lost all of their games so far this season, including their last encounter 9 – 0. Porth may well be a club in crisis and in definite need of a lift, but Saturday just wasn't to be their day, despite taking an early lead.

From the kick-off, Town didn't have to work particularly hard for any territory or to create chances – so they didn't. Just 15 minutes had elapsed and Chris Ham had managed to hit the bar twice, once more than Elliot Ford. Nick Harrhy also had another couple of efforts denied. On a rare foray into Monmouth's half a couple of slips let in the home side and after a bit of a melee they had taken a barely believable lead. It didn't last. First Chris Ham slotted home after easy work from Ford. then Harrhy rounded the 'keeper to put Town ahead.

More chances came and went and although it was just a matter of time before the game was safe. Porth still threatened on occasion while the Kingfishers did their best to make a game of it by passing up lots of chances and opportunities. Eliot Evans finally made it pipe and slippers time with a third on 68 minutes and that was that.

Town return to home action again next Saturday with League Cup game against second Division West End in a 2pm kick off at Pen-y-Pound Stadium while the youth team are at home on Thursday evening at Peny-y-Pound in a 7pm kick off.
