Rugby School, based in Warwickshire is known for its sprinkling of international students, including many from different parts of the UK. It is unusual however, to have someone from Wales representing the school. Local lad Tris Astley Jones is one of the few to have received a Sports Scholarship from the school where William Web Ellis picked up a football and changed the course of sporting history.
Since I can remember, I have been very interested in sports. I’ve always seemed to enjoy every new sport I’ve tried, you name it, I love it. I represented Abergavenny Rugby Club at a young age, and played in the Newport Schools area before leaving for Rugby School.
There is nothing quite like stepping out onto the pitch where the sport was created. I am surrounded by people in Wales that speak of the sport as a prized gem, and to be able to represent the school where the sport was invented is a very proud moment.
The proudest moment of my career was the last game of the 2015/16 season where I had been representing the 1st XV, the highest honour in the school. This game is a rare one as the whole school turn out to watch on a Thursday afternoon.
I was starting at outside centre (13), and when my name was read out I witnessed an unusually large scream, I looked over and there was my Mum and friends from back home. I’m glad we upped the percentage of Welsh people in Rugby for one day at least.
The school is well known for its sporting prowess and the opportunities it gives for people of a less privileged background. They encourage family to be together in their school days, I joined by brother Alex and sister Imogen as three of the very few people that have been accepted at the school on full scholarships from Wales.
