Abergavenny travelled to league newcomer’s Caerleon on Saturday in atrocious weather and conditions more suitable for bog snorkelling than rugby.

The home side adapted to the horrendous conditions quicker than Abergavenny and by mid-way through the first half were 10-0 up from a converted try and a penalty.

Abergavenny’s forwards had now acclimatised and their scrum and lineout was dominant.

After three lineouts close to the Caerleon line, all resulting in penalties, the referee awarded Abergavenny a penalty try converted by Matthew Edwards, 10-7.

As the second half started the weather conditions deteriorated further which put an end to any meaningful rugby being played. With the light fading Caerleon sealed their victory with an unconverted try leaving the players, officials, and supporters begging for the full time whistle.
