ABERGAVENNY'S Bill Owen has won the USN Welsh Cycling Event Organiser of the Year award for the second consecutive year
And at an event which once again showcased the Gateway to Wales's cycling credentials to the UK, Club Cyclist of the Year was awarded to Abergavenny Road Club's Graham Edwards, and Abergavenny Road Club also won Club of the Year for the second year in a row.
Owen won the title in 2013 for staging the Abergavenny Festival of Cycling but this year, backed by Monmouthshire County Council, he was the integral figure in the organisation of the British Cycling National Road and Time Trial Championships which were staged over a week in Monmouthshire during June.
The Championships saw legends of the sport race at Elite Men's and Women's level and Under-23 age category, with Sir Bradley Wiggins taking the national jersey in the Time Trial to add to his 2012 Olympic Games crown.
The road races started and finished in Abergavenny town centre, where thousands of cycling fans thronged to the county a week before the Tour de France left Yorkshire for its' annual race.
Owen, chairman of CC Abergavenny club, project managed the logistics of the event, and, with his army of helpers and volunteers, helped move barriers and facilities across not just the town but the county.
And his efforts saw high praise from fans, with many taking to social media and commenting on cycling websites to say that it was probably the best National Championships ever staged in the history of the event.
Owen, who lives in Penpergwm, said, "I am honoured to be receiving this award again on behalf of everyone who played a part in bringing the National Championships to our county again.
"We are indeed lucky people to be able to see London Olympic Games champions and Tour de France riders in battle for the biggest title in British road cycling this year on our own doorsteps."
It was the third time in seven years that Abergavenny had staged the Nationals - the others being held on 2007 and 2009 - with Owen a key figure in the organisation of each Championship.
