ABERGAVENNY U10s played NHSOB and put on a dominant performance. Strong defence and counter rucking at the breakdown enabled a platform to attack off.
With some well worked team tries and good hard direct running.
Player of the Match went to Marley for his organisation when playing 10. Ensuring attacking was set up and good distribution to players outside him.
With both Aber and Ponty having semi-finals last week, it was always going to be a challenge to hit top intensity for the two U14 teams — but this turned out to be a fantastic, competitive game with momentum swinging throughout.
Abergavenny opened the scoring from a well-worked set piece. Clever dummy lines in the backline created space for Danny at 10, who glided through untouched to score under the posts. Finley added the conversion.
However, a series of penalties and unforced errors allowed Pontypool Utd territory inside the Aber 22, and they capitalised with two unanswered tries to take the lead.
Aber responded strongly. From another set piece, Danny produced a brilliant solo effort—beating multiple defenders with powerful leg drive to cross the line. Alfie converted to level things up.
Both teams committed to playing open, running rugby, making for an entertaining contest. Euan Mac, on his first start, delivered a standout performance—covering every blade of grass and doing the vital unseen work that allowed the backs to shine.
Pontypool Utd came out strong again, adding another try to close the gap and keep the game finely balanced.
A quick-thinking penalty taken around 30 metres out saw the skipper catch Utd off guard, finding Louis at pace, who raced through to score under the posts.
After half-time Aber continued to move the ball wide at every opportunity. A break from Danny led to a slick exchange with Louis before Danny put in a perfectly weighted kick, which Louis gathered to score. Alfie added the extras.
Despite periods of control, a lapse in concentration saw Aber fumble possession. Utd reacted quickest, kicking through and winning the foot race to score and retake the lead.
Aiden, playing yet another position this season, impressed once again with a composed performance and excellent tackling against Utd’s dangerous back three. His versatility continues to be a huge asset, having played across the pack and backline this season.
With both teams still committed to attacking rugby, Aber were awarded a scrum 30 metres out late in the game. Owen fed Danny, who once again ghosted through the defence to score under the posts!! Slotted over by Finley
Danny was outstanding throughout, looking a level above at times, while Euan’s tireless work rate was equally crucial. Both players were deservedly named Players of the Match.
So lovely to see another squad performance. Multiple changes from last week fitting In seemingly and great to see injured players still coming cheering their team on.
