Issie Mogg of Crickhowell High School has had a cracking season in Pony Club Tetratrathlon.
Tetratrathlon is a sport for boys and girls of all ages - composed of four separate disciplines held over the course of a weekend, combining athletic ability with sound horsemanship.
Issie, as a junior, has to shoot with a pistol from seven metres, swim competively for three minutes, run cross country for 1500m and ride a horse over a three foot cross-country course.
Issie began the year with the Area 10 series of triathlons in January, February and March - taking first place as an individual and retaining the Series Cup for a second year. She was also awarded the June Todd Trophy for the best tetrathlete of 2012.
The tetrathlon season then started in earnest in April, with events in Pembrey (Area 18) and Glanusk (Area 10).
Unfortunately Issie's normal mount Seren Bach (from Triley Fields) had sustained an injury and it was uncertain if she would be fit for competition.
Luckily she was able to borrow another horse, Ellie, for Pembrey until Seren Bach was back in action.
Individual wins at both Pembrey and Glanusk meant selection for the Wales and Borders team at Windsor Horse Show.
This was memorable in more ways than one as Issie had secured a strong third place prior to the ride, only to have Seren accidentally break her bridle in the show jumping ring (Windsor Castle does not lend itself to cross country!).
Despite having to make a speedy repair with a leather belt while precious time ticked away, Issie still took seventh place overall and was the second placed girl in the competition, with the Welsh team of three coming a very creditable fourth.
Another first place at Ledbury Tetrathlon was excellant preparation for the half term .
Issie then took Seren to Bicton in Devon for three days of the Inter Area event with competitiors from Wales, Southern and Central England and took best shoot and best swim with a brilliant cross country ride culminating in first place as a junior - a title she has now held for three sucessive years.
Two days rest then saw Issie compete in her biggest event this year, again in the Wales and Borders team - the UK Junior Regional Championships - in a class of over 110 competitiors from Wales, Scotland, Southern and Northern Ireland and England divided into five regions.
The UK championships this year were hosted by Wales and held at Pembrey Country Park. A great swim and a run of five minutes 47 seconds together with a clear cross country round over a technical course resulted in fourth place overall.
Pony Club Tetrathlon has been a real oppportunity for Issie to meet and make friends from all over the country - and seeing Seren Bach return to full health and fitness has been the icing on the cake for her.
