Govilon - 3
Fairfield Utd - 2
DESPITE not kicking a ball since December 15 due to the constant drizzle and downpours, Govilon returned to winning ways on Saturday.
Govilon started brightly considering their long lay-off, and Adam Cueto in Fairfield's goal was swiftly called into action in the opening minutes, pulling off two fantastic saves in the space of five seconds. Govilon continued to dominate but were rocked after 15 minutes when the visitors took the lead with a low angled shot, a lead they held until the half time break.
In the second half Fairfield went further ahead five minutes in, when Govilon's defence got itself into a tangle and paid the price.
Ten minutes later Govilon were handed a life-line in bizarre circumstances, which they grabbed with both hands. Cueto, when preparing to take a goal kick allowed the ball to slip from his hands only to land at the feet of Govilon's latest hot-shot, Joey Carless, who had an easy tap-in.
Five minutes later Carless struck again to bring his side level when he rose to meet a Jamie Summers cross and headed past Cueto who by now was showing signs of being injured.
After Cueto left the field he was replaced in goal by Mike Davies who produced some quality saves as Govilon sensed victory.
Carless was in irrepressible form and it was his head which again did the damage as he scored from a corner with three minutes remaining, to give his side victory and himself the match ball, in what was a thrilling finale as Govilon continue to move up the league table.
On Saturday, Govilon travel to Newport based Pill FC who, as current league leaders, are throwing down a serious challenge for title honours (2.00pm), whilst Govilon's Gwent Central League side travel to Blaenavon Blues in the Mia Cars Cup (1.30pm).
