GOLFING youngster Adelaide Francis has rounded off another successful season which saw her win the world putting championship for girls aged 9-10 at the world famous Torrey Pines course in California.
It’s been a whirlwind year for the high-flyer, who was also crowned Monmouthshire’s Sports Woman of the Year, and proud mum Tracy couldn’t be prouder.
“The Torrey Pines tournament was amazing. The opening ceremony is Addie’s favourite. All 55 countries who compete are represented by a parade of flags, and Addie got to swap pin badges with children from around the globe.”
Since the age of six, when she first won the Welsh Mini Masters, Addie has received a wealth of support from Golf Development Wales. This year the 10-year-old trained with the Welsh nursery squad under the coaching of national coach Neil Matthews.
Addie, who began her golfing career at Alice Springs, a club who continue to give her a warm welcome whenever she has time to swing by for a round of golf, has spent the last three years playing at The Monmouthsire. However, following in the footsteps of junior Welsh international Callum Morris, she has recently left the club and has been been selected for the 2016 Welsh nursery squad.
Tracy told the Chronicle, “Although a new coach has been appointed to the nursery squad for next season, Neil Matthews will continue with overseeing Addie’s development.
“Addie has received a lot of great coaching, and I’d like to thank John Mcdonald and Junior Organisors Irene and Don Dodd at the Monmouthshire for all their help and support.”
Last month Adelaide was invited to meet professional golfer Lee Westwood at Close House, and over the half term break Addie travelled to Northhamptonshire to play in the British junior golf tour championships for girls aged 11-12.
Addie’s mum added, “Adelaide enjoys an amazing life through golf and gets to travel the world. She has benefited immensely from the encouragement of mentors such as Irene Dodd, and Golf Development Wales, which has has allowed Adelaide to develop at her own pace, and continue to enjoy the sport she loves.”
