Abergavenny Town FC - 1

Pontypridd Town - 1

Following their mid-week 3-1 triumph at Caerleon, Abergavenny Town closed the gap on league leaders Pontypridd Town, to seven points, with two games in hand over their championship rivals. So it was with extra anticipation that they welcomed Pontypridd to Pen-y-pound last Saturday.

It all started well with Town on top bringing a string of first half saves from Ponty ‘keeper Ryan Griffiths. However they suffered a setback five minutes from the interval when right back Brett Alderson was sent off for violent conduct.

Town used the half-time break to re-organise, introducing mid-field anchor, fit again Aaron Norman, and were rewarded just after the hour when they went ahead through Lewis Jones. Pontypridd realising they still held the extra man advantage continued to press and Town ‘keeper Tom Indge used all his command of the box to keep them at bay.

As the game moved into added time Pontypridd’s Luke Gullick struck with a volleyed shot from a free kick rebound.

Town’s thoughts now turn to their FAW Trophy final at the FAW’s Dragon Park complex in Newport, next Saturday (2.30pm) against Sully Sports, as they attempt to return the trophy to the town for the first time in 25 years.
