Panteg FC -5

ABERGAVENNY Town took the lead for the first time this season when Bradd Jones hammered home a free kick from the edge of the box after 20 minutes against Panteg.

Neither side troubled the score for the remainder of the half, but Town extended their lead on the hour when Panteg’s ‘keeper Ben Fletcher spilled a shot and Sean Feeley was on hand to net in a goal-mouth scramble.

Town’s two goal advantage was short-lived and seven minutes later Panteg opened their account with a tap-in from a free kick, with Town claiming offside.

At the other end Town thought they had extended their lead, but a Sean Feeley header went narrowly over the bar.

With 15 minutes remaining Town’s ‘keeper David Pearce was smartly off his line, saving bravely at the feet of a Panteg striker, but was at fault two minutes later when he mis-judged the flight of a free kick allowing Panteg to draw level. He then produced a miraculous save to keep his side in the game as Panteg piled on the pressure in the closing minutes. They wasted a free kick which Town thought was harshly awarded, and then missed from three metres with the goal at their mercy. Both sides settled for a draw after 90 minutes.

Town started the first period of extra time brightly with Nathan Davies’ shot blocked in the box, but it was Panteg who edged ahead for the first time when sub Alex Probert tapped in at the far post.

Town fought back with Scott Cleere’s excellent shot on the turn being well saved by Fletcher, but it was Panteg who held the advantage at the break.

After the re-start Panteg’s Mike Passmore’s long range effort beat Pearce and when Panteg added another in quick succession it was a lost cause for the Town.

On Saturday the Town return to league action entertaining Pontardawe Town at Pen-y-Pound Stadium. Kick off is 2.30pm.
