ABERGAVENNY Town bounced back in the league with a 2-0 win at Abercarn United on Saturday, following three cup exits in as many weeks

The return to Ardal South East action proved just the tonic, as they leapfrogged their hosts to go fourth.

Liam Head netted his first goal of the campaign after 10 minutes to give the Pennies the lead.

And Curtis Methven then doubled the visitors' advantage on 63 minutes to secure all three points and cap a much-needed return to winning ways.

The result will please manager Steve Davies, with Abergavenny maintaining their 100 per cent league record and recording a third consecutive Ardal clean sheet.

Goytre and Blaenavon Blues were forced to share the spoils though, as their league derby finished in a goalless draw under the Plough Road floodlights on Friday night.

Blues goalkeeper Adam Rafter atoned himself for dropping a sixth-minute cross by making a save from Josh Gibson prior to denying Lewis Iles two minutes later from a 25-yard drive.

Gibson then went close in the 12th minute with a speculative half volley from nearly 35 yards before it was the turn of Goytre custodian Cohen Riella to come off his line and deny Nathan Watts as he broke into the penalty area.

Iles' 21st minute effort from the edge of the box was next saved prior to Gibson directing an effort wide of the far post from a tight angle seconds later.

Frazer Probert snatched at a 25-yard shot in the 24th minute before Kai Burton drove forward two minutes later, but could only direct his strike straight into the hands of Riella.

The host's goalkeeper then denied Probert six minutes before the interval and Burton directed the rebound wide of goal.

And the Blues ended the opening half strongly, as Probert's effort from the edge of the box was blocked in the 44th minute.

After the break, Lewis McCauley's 53rd-minute effort from the edge of the box was intercepted before William Priest struck a 30-yard effort moments later straight at Riella.

Jordan Carey fired over the crossbar on the hour mark after the ball was played into the box, prior to Sam Roberts fizzing a strike over from the edge of the penalty area.

Cole Doolan was also denied by Rafter when he ran on to a through ball, and Carey‘s 68th-minute shot was blocked before directing the rebound over the bar.

Blues responded when Watts' strike was saved prior to Matthew Burns' 25-yard free-kick being saved seven minutes later.

Watts was then denied from the edge of the box after an 88th-minute free-kick was only partially cleared.

Goytre continued to push for the winning goal, Jack Pewtner striking just wide of the target seconds later following a swift counter-attack, before Iles had an effort saved in the fifth minute of stoppage-time, but it stayed scoreless.

The hosts remain unbeaten after three leagues matches to sit fifth, while Blues extended their unbeaten run to four matches in all competitions.

Abergavenny Town host Caldicot Town in the league this Friday night (September 18), while Goytre visit Novira Cymru South Club Afan Lido in the Welsh Cup the same evening.

Blaenavon Blues play the following afternoon in the league at Undy, who Goytre host the following Friday night (September 25).
