Abergavenny Women - 1

Cardiff Met. University - 0

IT was an historic afternoon at Pen-y-Pound when Abergavenny Women became the first team this season to defeat Cardiff Met.

And the ladies thoroughly deserved it, battling awful weather and a bog of a pitch to secure three priceless points in their battle at the top end of the premier league table.

Abergavenny dominated the first-half and went close several times to unlocking a tight Cardiff defense.

Five minutes from half-time, Cardiff’s keeper failed to deal with an Abergavenny free kick and the quick reactions of top scorer Maxine Mudge saw her fire home from close range to take the lead.

Both teams knew with the rain pouring down and pitch deteriorating it was always going to be a battle after the break

Several stoppages early in the second-half due to Cardiff Met injuries didn’t help the flow of the game but the home side weren’t complaining as they looked to hang on against a side looking to keep their unbeaten tag.

Mali Summers and Katie Adams at the heart of the defence were outstanding and gave great heart to the players in front of them as belief grew and the clock ticked down.

The visitors had several half chances as they threw the proverbial kitchen sink at Aber, but the best chance went to Abergavenny’s Lauren Boyd who saw her left footed strike go agonisingly wide late on.

The final whistle brought fantastic scenes as the ladies celebrated their victory in muddy style.

Manager Richie Jeremiah was ecstatic following the game and heaped praise on his players after a titanic battle which will give his side much belief moving forward.
