Cardiff City Women - 1
Abergavenny Women - 2
ABERGAVENNY travelled to the capital on Sunday to the home of current Welsh Cup holders Cardiff City, and with both teams enjoying 100 percent winning records so far this season, something had to give.
A tight first half saw both teams creating several good chances, the best for Abergavenny falling to striker Alana Murphy who spurned two great opportunities when through on goal.
The match looked destined for stalemate at the break, until right on the stroke of half-time the
Bluebirds broke down the left and the deadlock was broken with a neat finish from the host’s midfielder.
This was a hammer blow for the Aber ladies who had no time to respond before the interval.
“No need to panic!” was the call from young manager Richie Jeremiah, who knew his team’s strike power would provide ample chances to win the game.
Just five minutes after the restart, Alana Murphy equalized with style and it was game on.
Right wing Kate Jeremiah was put clean through on goal, but denied a score by a fine save.
With 15 minutes remaining, leading scorer Lyndsey Davies gave Abergavenny the lead with a touch of individual brilliance in the box and a classy finish for a 2-1 lead.
The remainder of the match remained tense as Cardiff launched attack after attack, looking for the equaliser.
The cross bar came to Abergavenny’s rescue on two occasions, aided and abetted by some fine last ditch tackles and saves from keeper Charlotte Hastings.
Abergavenny dug in deep and gained a fantastic three points which sees them sitting on top of the Women’s Welsh Premier League.
Next Sunday Rhyl are the visitors to Pen-y-Pound with a 2pm kick off.
