CRICKHOWELL recorded their first victory of the season in the Autocentre Gwent Premier League Second Division following a 6-2 win over Usk Town at The Elvicta.

The hosts were coming off the back of a midweek 1-0 home reverse against Rassau while the Green Army were buoyed by a 2-2 draw at home to Pontnewynydd.

Usk enjoyed the better of the goal scoring chances in the opening stages but it was Crick who broke the deadlock when Richard Hansford headed home at the near post from a 19th minute Alun Jones corner.

And the hosts doubled their advantage six minutes later when Lloyd Morgan found the back of the net from another corner delivered by Luc Samuel.

The Jackdaws then extended their lead when Michael Ling ran on to a well-timed deep through ball from Jones before rounding the advancing James Noon in the Usk goal and turning the ball into an empty net for 3-0.

Crick added a fourth eight minutes before the interval when Eddie Watkins' 25-yard free-kick beat the defensive wall and nestled inside Noon's near post.

And they went nap 12 minutes after the interval when Samuel was played in on goal by Omar Bojang and finished past Noon from close-range for 5-0.

Usk Town pulled a goal back in the 77th minute when Oliver Rudall converted a penalty awarded by referee Lee Smith after Louis Quinton had been brought down whilst attempting to get a shot in on goal.

However, the hosts regained their five-goal advantage within two minutes of the restart after Jones successfully converted a penalty at the opposite end.

The scoring was completed in the 90th minute when Gene Gurie struck a dipping volley over the head of Crickhowell custodian Alex Hoseley that brought back memories of Marco van Basten's strike against the USSR in the Euro 88 final at Munich's Olympic Stadium.

Elsewhere, GP1 Brynmawr United made it 26 goals in three league games to cap an extraordinary seven days of free-style scoring.

Having walloped Llanhilleth Athletic 12-0 at home the previous weekend, Jack Williams and Nathan Price with hat-tricks, they nuked Coed Eva Athletic 9-0 away in midweek, with seven different scorers, and then floored Pontnewydd United 5-2 away on Saturday, Charles Davies with a brace.

They were due to host derby rivals Nantyglo last night (Tuesday, September 1) who followed up a 2-1 midweek away loss at Cwmcarn Athletic with a 3-0 Saturday home win over FC Tredegar, Hadlee Davies with a first half brace and Caleb George Withers securing the points in stoppage time.

And Brynmawr will be in action again at home on Friday night (September 4) against Lucas Cwmbran.

Saturday’s fixtures (September 5) include – Clydach Wasps v Marshfield, Alway v Nantyglo, Crickhowell v Croesyceiliog Athletic, Thornwell R&W v Usk Town, Forgeside v PILCS 2nds, Sebastopol v Clydach Wasps 2nds, Pontypool Town v Mardy 2nds.

Mardy 1sts were due to open their Gwent Central One league account last night after the Chronicle went to print at home to Forgeside.

Meanwhile in the same division, Glascoed FC have rebranded as Llanarth FC and changed their strip from orange and black to navy and red.

Although the club was founded in 2024 and played as Glascoed for two seasons, it has always played its home fixtures at the Llanarth Village Hall ground.
