ABERGAVENNY hockey player Elin Leppard has been picked to represent Wales in the forthcoming Easter Test Series held in Scotland.

The talented goalkeeper will join fellow Monmouth Girls School pupil and midfielder Mari Paulson in Glasgow as part of the Wales Under-16s team.

The two 15-year-olds will make their international debuts in a three-match series against Scotland.

Elin and Mari were selected after working hard and impressing in training camps since October.

Elin plays her club hockey with Abergavenny Ladies, while Mari was a regular member of Gwent before switching to Cardiff and Met.

Both are stand-out first-team players at Monmouth School for Girls.

Last autumn, the pair were selected to play for Celtic Jaguars Under-15s girls at St Albans in the Futures Cup.

“Being selected for Wales for the first time is a great opportunity for us and it will be fun to go up to Scotland to play,” said Mari.

“It’s our first steps into our Welsh hockey journey and it has made all the hard work worth it.

“If we play together as a team we can definitely beat Scotland but we also need to enjoy the whole experience.”

Elin started her hockey as an outfield player but became a goalkeeper when she was in Year 6.

“Playing in goal can be quite fun and terrifying at the same time but it’s something I enjoy,” she said.

“Scotland will be hard opponents because we played their unofficial team in the Futures Cup last year and they were excellent.”

Wales will face Scotland Under-16s at Glasgow National Hockey Centre on Friday, March 30 (5.30pm), Saturday, March 31 (1.30pm) and on Sunday, April 1 (9am).
