Abergavenny Women FC - 1
Cascade FC - 0
ABERGAVENNY took on lower league opposition on Sunday with the prize of a quarter-final place up for grabs and despite the narrow looking score line it doesn’t really tell the whole story.
Manager Richie Jeremiah made six changes from last weekend giving some fringe players an opportunity, and with five teenagers starting it certainly was a youthful looking line up.
Abergavenny made a quick start with Kate Jeremiah breaking through and firing home for a third minute lead. No one then could’ve imagined that this would be the only goal of the game. Jeremiah went close after 20 minutes but saw her effort come back off the post.
Cascade offered little in attack but competed well and frustrated premier league Abergavenny. Having made so many changes it was inevitable that Abergavenny wouldn’t be at their very best but giving youngsters an opportunity has always been a philosophy at the club.
Indeed, 16-year-old Abergavenny born Eliza Atkins was seeing plenty of ball out wide and clearly grew in confidence as the game went on.
With such a big prize the manager made three substitutions in the second half to ensure the victory.
Yet they couldn’t put the game to bed with Jeremiah smashing a shot off the bar and Atkins hitting the post from close range.
Nevertheless, Abergavenny ended the game with another clean sheet, making it seven out of eight matches this season, and have now secured a quarter-final spot in the Welsh Cup in February.
Manager Richie Jeremiah praised his youngsters after the game and said, “It was a great experience for the girls and though it only ended 1-0 we dominated and managed the game well and no one could deny the better side hasn’t gone through.”
