Abergavenny Town FC - 0

Caerau FC - 2

THE opening 40 minutes of Abergavenny’s match against Caerau Ely saw the visitors slowly but surely take a grip on proceedings and break the stalemate five minutes before the interval.

Caerau fired in a shot which David Pearce in Town’s goal saved well by pushing the ball to his right, but in nipped Elijah Chilweka to score from the narrowest of angles.

Within two minutes the visitors, who were relegated from Division One last season, had doubled their lead when a blistering long range effort by Jerome Actie from 30 yards gave Pearce very little chance.

After the break, Town, who were fielding a makeshift side with six first team regulars missing, improved and hit a purple patch halfway through when Lance Lewis went close with a header from a free kick, but in the end a two-goal cushion was sufficient for the visitors to claim the points and extend their unbeaten start to the season.

PICTURED in action are Mardy who suffered a tough opening day at the office when Usk Town thrashed them 7-0.

The encouraging pre-season results for Chris Price’s men went out on of the window as the well-drilled visitors (wearing green) netted their goals courtesy of a brace for Alex Head and Phil Stephens, and one apiece for Ryan Hancock, Harry Wade and Chris Butler.

Mardy travel to Cromwell Youth this Saturday before welcoming Newport Saints to Mardy Park on September 1.
