With the Summer rain storms still upon us Brynmawr Welfare Bowls Club faces a forthcoming fixture pile up, with many matches cancelled due to flooded bowls rinks, and with the late start of five internal competitions which would normally be at the quarter final stage at this time of year are still to commence.
Combine this with the main holiday periods which are approaching and the team selectors John Price and Owen Dando will certainly have their work cut out for the remainder of the season.
Brynmawr Welfare team selectors had a full team selection to choose from this weekend with players returning from sickness and holidays, this made life extremely hard for the selectors with all team members being keen to play.
The selectors were faced with picking their strongest team available but at time being careful to give all squad members a much needed fair quota of matches.
On a beautiful Sunday afternoon Brynmawr Welfare entertained Pontymister Welfare in a GBL League match.
Early on in the match the scores were very close with John Price's rink drawing 4-4, Lyn Elias rink at 3 –3, Ian Sharpe's rink 5- 8 down and Norman Doel's rink 6-7 down, by the interval scores had changed on most rinks With Norman Doel's rink leading by 11-9, Lyn Elias rink leading by 6-4, John Prices rink edging in front by 6-5 and with only Ian Sharpe's rink losing by 6-10.
On resumption of play the high standard of play from both teams continued, with special praise for Brynmawr's 15 year old Welsh under 18yrs. International Aaron Rees who played some excellent shots during the match, how ever the shot of the match or rather the fluke of the match belonged to Norman Doel, going in with the last wood at 5 down Norman' drive clipped a wood and went wide only to clip an outside wood and carrier off into the pack to take the points (all's fair in love and Bowls).
Final Scores
John Price's rink lost 10 – 20
Lyn Elias Rink drew 13 - 13
Ian Sharpe's rink lost 13 – 22
Norman Doel's rink won 21 – 14
Total Score:
Brynmawr Welfare 57
Pontymister 69
Brynmawr Welfare 3pts
Pontymister Welfare 11pts
Unfortunately Brynmawr Welfare player Gordon Rees was due to play but had to pull pull out due to breaking a bone in his foot, everyone hopes Gordon will be back in the not to distant future, Gordon is a very respected and excellent team member and will be sorely missed.
