THE second annual Memorial Day to remember past players and members of Abergavenny Cricket Club has taken place.

Paul Beaumont, Alan Dawkins and Kevin Schofield and all those who have recently passed away were among those remembered.

The day follows on from last year when benches were unveiled for Dick Brown and Ray Hamer, with Stephen and Helen Brown once again spearheading the occasion.

There was once again another good turn out to watch firstly a junior Memorial Day XI v Abergavenny CC XI followed by a senior game.

Both games contributed towards the awarding of the Critics Corner Cup.

After last year’s tie, this year Abergavenny CC ran out worthy winners with both sides winning their games.

Player of the match awards in the junior game were presented to Maria Sheehan and Celt Thomas by Owen Dawkins, who lost his father recently.

Will Eccles received the Critics Corner Cup on behalf of Abergavenny CC.

Meanwhile, Usk CC’s skippers have had their say on their season.

The 1sts captain Elliot Doyle said: “A late-season losing streak saw us finish in sixth in South Wales Premier One, some way short of what we aimed for...

“Injuries added to the losses of form that hurt us throughout the year, but there were signs of growth from a few of the young lads in particular, and we’ll look forward to bouncing back.”

And 2nds skipper Jamie Rayner said: “A rocky start to life in South East Wales 2 threatened to derail us, but the boys dug in, fought back, and finished a hard-earned sixth.

“We had a grinding mid-season slump, then a defiant August surge, achieving three wins in four, to close the season on a high.”

Arvind Aswani, 3rds captain, added after finishing ninth in SEW 9: “The team fought hard all year and we were unlucky to be on the wrong side of some results.

“Team spirit was fantastic and great to see some youngsters coming through.”
