ABERGAVENNY Cricket Club can boast a remarkable cricketing family, dubbed ‘The Jackson 4’.

Eve Jackson, 19, and her siblings Tess, 17, Beth, 14, and Ted, 12, began their cricketing adventure in lockdown in 2020, when fine weather encouraged the whole family – Mum, Dad, the three girls and six-year-old Ted – to find an outdoor activity they could enjoy together.

The family played cricket on the driveway every day, and as the children became more curious and wanted to learn properly, they developed from plastic bats and balls.

When they outgrew the driveway and found no suitable local facilities, they cleared a disused, overgrown tennis court at an abandoned primary school, then built fences and nets around it to create a practice area.

The family still maintains the site, and the children, including Eve, practise there almost every day.

As lockdown ended, they joined Abergavenny CC, which had a strong junior section, and Eve and Tess played in mixed U13 teams, while Beth and Ted joined the All-Stars programme.

As their skills developed, they achieved national recognition representing Wales at different levels.

Having all attended Hay-on-Wye Primary School, they then moved on to Christ College Brecon, with Eve leaving school last summer, and the other three still studying there on sports scholarships.

Eve now plays regularly in Tier 2 with Glamorgan CCC Women, while Tess is part of the Glamorgan U18s set up, and Beth plays for the Glamorgan U14s.

The latter two are also members of the Glamorgan Elite Player Programme.

Ted plays for the Glamorgan U13s, a year above his age group, and turns 13 in October.

And just days ago, he became the youngest ever player to play senior cricket for the division-winning Abergavenny CC 2nds, aged just 12 years 102 days, scoring a brilliant 83.
