THERE were mixed emotions on Saturday for Abergavenny CC on a final weekend of weather-hit league matches.

The washout saw Aber 2nds clinch the South East Division 4 title by a single point from Pontymister & Crosskeys without a ball bowled.

But the cricket boot was firmly on the other foot for the 1sts who were cruelly sunk by the downpour, unable to play while relegation battling rivals Carmarthen Wanderers produced a miracle comeback at Usk in a rain-reduced 22-over match to overhaul them.

Wanderers were indebted to Liam Rogers who fired an unbelievable 52 not out from just 16 balls in the only fixture played in South Wales Premier One, condemning Abergavenny 1sts to the drop in ninth place after two years in the top flight.

Aber won four games, lost 10, and saw four cancelled or abandoned, with Morgan Bevans scoring 405 runs at 28.93, while Sam Clarke took 28 wickets at 18.57 and Josh Spies, who had to return to Australia before the end of the season, 23 at 23.96.

It didn't help that near neighbours Usk - who were second at the end of June - finished in a slump losing their last six games, including the relegation decider against Wanderers, and ended up finishing sixth.

Abergavenny 2nds made it back to back titles though taking the SEW 4 title, having been crowned SEW Divison 5 champions last year.

It was more difficult this term, but they held on to top spot, having secured 11 victories in 18 games with only three losses.

Elsewhere, Llanarth 1sts managed to play their final game away to Llandaff 3rds in SEW 5, scoring 150-4 off a reduced 25 overs, Will Heath firing 46, Chris Bridges 39 and Sam Michell 28.

But the hosts cracked 153-3 in 20.2 overs in reply, Tom Heath taking two wickets, leaving Llanarth fourth.

Glangrwyney 1sts also finished sixth in SEW 8 after their final match at home to Dinas Powys was scrubbed.
