Abergavenny welcomed Croesyceiliog to Avenue Road for their penultimate MBA game of the season. They won on two rinks, drew on one and were defeated on the final rink but managed to win the game by 85 shots to 82.

The rinks of Anthony Moriarty and Matthew Vale were successful for Abergavenny. Anthony Moriarty’s rink scored 18 shots and conceded only four between the sixth and sixteenth end. This allowed them to build a considerable lead to eventually win their game by 25 shots to 14. Matthew Vale’s rink also built a substantial lead by the fifteenth end. Although the Croesyceiliog rink battled back, they were still defeated by 25 shots to 20. The game on John Beaton’s rink was a much closer affair with never more than three shots between the two rinks. By scoring one shot on each of the final two ends the Abergavenny rink forced a tied game with the score 17 all. Unfortunately, despite being in contention throughout the game, the rink of Jack Vale conceded ten shots on the final three ends. This consigned them to defeat by 31 shots to 18.

Abergavenny Ladies have played two friendly fixtures at Avenue Road in the past week. The first of these was against local rivals Gilwern, when Abergavenny won on two rinks and drew on the remaining rink to win the game comfortably.

Mary Evans’ rink was involved in a very even game for the first twelve ends, with the Abergavenny rink holding a one shot advantage at that stage of the game. They then outscored the opposition over the final third to win by 28 shots to 10. The rink of Judy Belli was very close throughout and the Gilwern rink managed to score three shots on the final two ends to gain a draw 13 shots all. The remaining Abergavenny rink took control from the start. They restricted their opponents to scoring on four ends only to go on and register a convincing victory. It was a different story in the other ladies fixture against Garndiffaith. The opposition won on all three rinks to win the game by a large margin.

This week Abergavenny MBA team will play their final league fixture of the season against Bedwelty Park at Avenue Road on Saturday. There will also be a mixed team friendly game against St Martin’s in Hereford on Thursday evening.
