ABERGAVENNY Ladies beat a visiting Caldicot side to win on all three links and secure a victory by 84 shots to 34.

Ceri Clark’s rink built a ten shot lead over the first five ends. They never allowed their opponents to get into the game from this point, and went on to win by 34 shots to 11. Sian Phillips’ rink was behind after the first five ends but then scored heavily to lead after eight ends and win the game 31-13. The game on the rink of Judy Belli was a much closer affair with the scores being level after 13 ends. The Abergavenny rink then outscored their opponents over the final five ends to win 19 -10.

Abergavenny’s MBA team did not fare as well as the ladies when they played their rearranged league game at Bedwelty Park. They could win on only one rink and were beaten by 84 shots to 65. John Vale was the only successful rink for Abergavenny. After being all square at the halfway point of the game, they outscored their opponents in the second half to record a 25-13 win.

The game on Robert Poynter’s rink was close throughout but the Bedwelty Park rink managed to secure victory over the final three ends, winning 19-16. Matthew Vale’s rink had a 13 shot deficit with seven ends to play. Although they reduced their opponents lead, they were eventually defeated 25 - 17. Anthony Moriarty’s rink never got a toehold into their game and was defeated 26 - 7.

This Friday (July 26) the Abergavenny quartet of Matthew Vale, Gethin Hill, Martin Doughty and John Vale will contest the final of Monmouthshire Bowling Association’s Open Rink competition at Pontymister. They play against a rink from Beaufort for the title. By reaching the final both teams have qualified to play in the Welsh Championship finals at Llandrindod Wells on Sunday August 11 .

This Saturday Abergavenny GBL team play at Belle Vue. This is followed on Sunday by a rearranged MBA game against Cwmbran Park at Avenue Road. On Tuesday, Abergavenny Ladies travel to St. Julians for a league game.
