ABERGAVENNY Bowls Club are looking for new members to swell their ranks for the forthcoming season.

Last year sponsorship from The Auberge and Christie Residential allowed 24 new members of the club to learn the game using the most up to date equipment.

This year the club will be receiving a grant from the Tesco Cash For Bags Community Support Programme, resulting in even more playing equipment being available for newcomers.

A club’s spokesperson said, “The green has been well prepared and with the help of a grant from Community Chest our five newly qualified coaches are ready to greet you at the free welcome taster sessions planned for the start of the season.

“Don’t worry if you haven’t played before, we all have to start somewhere and with help and guidance from the coaches and others at the club Avenue Road is a great place to start and .you will soon feel very much at home.

Steve File, who joined the Avenue Road club last year said, “I had always fancied playing bowls but never had the opportunity. I attended the free club taster sessions and was made to feel welcome and had tremendous encouragement from everyone at the club. I also liked the fact that I could try bowls without having to spend huge amounts of money on equipment as everything needed is provided. I enjoyed the experience so much I continued playing and now play in one of the league teams plus the mixed friendly matches. I even won the Club Novice Cup for 2018.”

The club’s spokesperson added, “Bowls is an ideal sport for the whole family and whatever your ability you can be guaranteed a warm welcome, lots of help and a great social environment. We will also see the return of the Gwent Bowls League team for the men at the club, something made possible by the addition of so many new members. We supply all the equipment you need to practice, you only having to bring a pair of trainers and most importantly, the welcome taster sessions are free.”

If you are in interested then the club would love to meet you and have arranged two welcome sessions especially for you to try bowls.

The sessions will run on Sunday April 14 from 3.30pm and Wednesday April 17 from 4.30pm. Contact Maurice Padfield on 01873 852227 or 07968 867749 or email him on [email protected] for more information. You can also contact Jackie Evans on 01873 853301.
