Last Saturday Abergavenny played their second game in the WBA Cup at Six Bells and were successful on three rinks to win the game by 81 shots to 66.
The Abergavenny rink of Peter Stahl built an early ten shot lead. This was gradually eroded until scores were level on the twelfth end. They then re-established control of the game to win by 26 shots to 14. Matthew Vale’s rink was always in the lead throughout their game and continued to keep a grip on proceedings and eventually win their game by 18 shots to 15.
Gethin Hill’s rink played in a close contest with there never being more than a two shot difference throughout the game, after the first three ends. The Abergavenny rink managed to secure victory by scoring one shot on the final end to win the game by 15 shots to 14. Although the rink of Robert Poynter established a 12 shot lead by the fourteenth end, their lead was gradually reduced over the next five ends. The Six Bells rink then scored two shots on the final end to win by 23 shots to 22.
In their GBL game at Avenue Road against Caerleon, Aber were less successful and the only rink to record a victory was that of Maurice Padfield.
They took control of their game from the start to win comfortably by 21 shots to 12.
Derek Bailey’s rink was all square with their opponents after ten ends but the Caerleon rink then took the initiative to win by 23 shots to 16. Fred Mutimer’s rink could never get into their game and were behind from the start. They eventually were defeated by 26 shots to 12.
Last week four members of Abergavenny Ladies took part in the County rinks Competition played at Pontyfelin.
Having received a bye in the first round, they were then drawn to play Caldicot. Although the Abergavenny rink got off to a slow start, trailing by 11 shots to four after eight ends, they grew stronger as the match progressed and eventually won by 27 shots to 14 to reach the last eight of the competition. The final stages of the cup will be played at a later date.
This weekend Abergavenny need to win their WBA cup game, against Bedwelty Park at Avenue Road, to progress to the knock out stages of the competition. The GBL team will travel to RTB Ebbw Vale for a league fixture on Sunday.
