USK Primary is seeking support from the local community and beyond in its bid to secure an all-weather track for the school’s grounds.

The school’s Parent Teacher Association (PTA) has applied to the Aviva Community Fund for funds to construct a track so that pupils can undertake their Daily Mile exercise in poor conditions. Funding depends on the degree of backing the project receives so the PTA has launched an appeal asking people to cast votes in support. Voting closes on Tuesday November 21.

The Daily Mile is a popular and free initiative that sees children run, walk or jog for 15 minutes every day in their primary and nursery schools. Offering fresh air and exercise, it is simply carried out in the school uniform and is in addition to time-tabled physical education and sports.

Chair of the school’s PTA, Anthony Lewis said, “The Daily Mile is encouraged across the UK as it not only improves pupils’ health and fitness but also helps with general wellbeing and academic achievement. Unfortunately, our grounds tend to get rather muddy for much of the year and this creates difficulties.

“Having an all-weather track will not only benefit the children but also clubs and groups that use our facilities. There is nowhere in Usk where we can run safely, especially as the days get shorter and the ground gets soggier.”

Anthony added, “I’d be very grateful if as many people as possible would vote for us and also urge their friends and families to do likewise before the deadline of November 21.”
