Abergavenny RFC - 29

Brynmawr RFC - 22

League high fliers Brynmawr visited Bailey Park on Saturday where a large crowd were treated to a terrific game of rugby, a great team performance, and of course, an all important Abergavenny win.

Aber were able to field a settled side with only two changes from the team that played against Pill a fortnight earlier. Rhob Connick came in at scrum half and Josh Hitchman in the back row.

The home side started the game playing with great composure and accuracy, putting together numerous phases of play, which paid dividends when Brynmawr's defence stepped offside and Rhodri Webster slotted over the resulting penalty.

From the restart Brynmawr drove deep into Abergavenny territory and this time Genni were caught offside as the Brynmawr outside half levelled the scores.

The home side were soon back on the offensive with both backs and forwards making good inroads into the Brynmawr half. Ieuan Mainwaring was put into space on the right hand side and after a strong run for the line, an audacious pass inside was plucked out of the air by Dan Horler to score a terrific try under the post, converted by Rhodri Webster,10-3.

For the remainder of the half, Brynmawr starved Aber of any worthwhile possession. The visitors pick and drive game was particularly effective resulting in two penalties, 10-9.

As the first half drew to a close Brynmawr backs pulled off a well-executed move to score an unconverted try, 14-10.

Aber started the second half with much determination and urgency. From a close range line-out, a driving maul which included all but two of the Abergavenny side, enabled centre Gareth Beavan to claim the touch down, 15-14.

From broken play a loose ball was picked up by Abergavenny's talisman Owen Staphnil who produced two side steps Shane Williams would have been proud of and a ten metre sprint to score a very popular try, converted by Rhodri Webster, 22-14.

From the restart Aber fumbled the ball and were penalised, allowing Brynmawr to claw back three points.

The home side once again pressed forward and spotting the tiniest of gaps in the Brynmawr defence, young scrum half Rhob Connick's deft little kick was picked up by the ever present Dan Horler to score Abergavenny's bonus point try, converted by Rhodri Webster, 29-14.

With the last play of the day a battling Brynmawr were awarded an unconverted try to leave the final score 29-22 in what was a more than memorable victory for the Bailey Park brigade.

The match was sponsored by The Neil family who awarded the man of the match to Owen Staphnil.

On Saturday Abergavenny are away to Tredegar, all are welcome on the bus, but those travelling on their own, please check with the club before leaving.
