IT was a bad week for Abergavenny squash club, who lost all three matches to various teams within the Newport club. However, both the 'A' and 'B' teams maintained their league positions so all is not lost!
The 'C' team were on the end of a thrashing from the league leaders Newport 'F', losing all five matches and only gaining one set and one point. In fairness, Aber had a weakened team, with both Peter Steed and Jiwan Gahunia unavailable, and captain Tim Woodier unwell on the night. All that can be said is that the only way from here is up.
Tim Woodier (1) lost 3-0;
Mitchell Lawrence (2) lost 3-1;
Simon Cave (3) lost 3-0;
Matthew Thomas (4) lost 3-0;
Mark Nicholls (5) lost 3-0.
Another loss to a Newport (D) team this week for the 'B' team, who were just beaten by three matches to two. Chris Phelps and Karl Whiteman won comfortably, but Gary and Ellis Lawrence both lost 3-0, and the match came down to the last set between the two top players, which Mike Logan narrowly lost 15-13. However, the team remain in fourth place.
Mike Logan (1) lost 3-2;
Gary Lawrence (2) lost 3-0;
Chris Phelps (3) won 3-0;
Ellis Lawrence (4) lost 3-0;
Karl Whiteman (5) won 3-1.
A disappointing result for the "A" this week, losing by three matches to two against a Newport 'A' side who are below them in the league.
In fairness, the team was weakened by the unavailability of captain Chris Hill. The team's top two players, Jethro Binns and Lewys Hurst were comfortable winners, but the rest of the team struggled, winning only two sets between them. However, the team remain in third place, and, with six matches left for the season, are on course to maintain this position.
Jethro Binns (1) won 3-1;
Lewys Hurst (2) won 3-0;
Steve Williams (3) lost 3-1;
Gareth Hughes-Jones (4) lost 3-1;
Mike Logan (5) lost 3-0.
