Abercarn United - 2
Blaenavon Blues - 1
DUE to the unavailability of a number of their first team regulars, Blaenavon Blues fielded a youthful side for their away fixture to Abercarn, and despite being narrowly defeated the youngsters gave a good account of themselves in a tough and physical game. Alex Bull did well in goal, while Jamie Brankley, Ben Penry, Grant Evans Jr, and Daryll Brenton all gave 100% and not one of them looked out of place.
Abercarn took all three points, to maintain their mid table position, while The Blues need to pick up at least six/eight points from their remaining eleven fixtures to ensure that they avoid the trap door of relegation back to the second division.
Abercarn took the lead when an early corner was not dealt with by Matthew Cox at the near post and the ball was bundled into the net.
To be fair Abercarn were the better side in the first half and dominated the open 35 minutes, while the Blues only started to get going just before half time, when they were unlucky not to have equalised.
The second half saw the Blues up the tempo and attacked Abercarn at will, but another defensive mistake allowed Abercarn to double their lead.
The Blues battled hard to get back in the game and when Darren Harris pulled a goal back Blaenavon pushed more and more numbers forward to get the equaliser.
But Abercarn held firm to take maximum points and leave the Blues frustrated yet again.
Next up for the Blues is the visit of high flying Coed Eva Athletic to Blaenavon's Co-op Field with a 3pm kick-off.
Elsewhere in Gwent County Division One, the Mardy finally put an end to their recent losing streak with a 3-2 away win over Pentwynmawr Athletic.
