Abergavenny mum of two Katie Bailey had the shock of her life when pop singer/songwriter Will Young called in at her father’s garage for a coffee and some new tennis balls for his dog.
Katie, company secretary at Bailey’s Garage on Brecon Road, would normally have been working in the back office but had just returned from the bank and was in the shop on Monday lunchtime when the ex-X Factor star walked in.
“I didn’t recognise him at first because I remember him as being baby-faced but Kirsty, who works on the bakery section, spotted him straight away,” she said.
“I asked him if I could have a selfie and he said ‘yes’ but he needed the loo first so I hung around outside! One of my colleagues said I looked like a stalker.
“We had a nice conversation after that. He was really lovely.
“He said he was on his way to Hay to a studio where he writes and he’d dropped in to get some tennis balls for his dog because he kept losing them.
“We discussed the weather I think but I can’t remember much else. I was too stunned!
“The customers in the shop and on the forecourt were stunned too.
“He did another selfie with my colleague Adam Fury then he left with his coffee.
“He was dressed like Where’s Wally - in a striped blue and white T-shirt, a beanie-style bobble hat, rolled up jeans and Doc Martins.
“I noticed he had mud all over his shoes - and the blue Audi he was driving was muddy too. Maybe he’d been out walking the dog somewhere in the countryside.
“I’ve heard he has a brother living around here.”
Katie, who’s 28, has worked at her father’s garage since she was 15. She has a six-year-old daughter Lily May and two-year-old son Charlie.
“I can’t remember anyone famous calling in here before. Meeting a star like that’s the highlight of my life,” she said.
Since her Dad put the selfie out on Facebook it’s reached 7,000 people and counting.
