Clydach Wasps - 5
Blaenavon Blues - 2
CLYDACH Wasps stormed their way to silverware on Sunday after beating the Blaenavon Blues in the final of the Benevolent Cup.
Playing at Plough Road, the Blues started briskly with the Daryl Brenton and Grant Evans combination in defence looking firm at the back against two excellent forwards from Clydach.
There were a couple of half chances for either team before Clydach's James Hapgood struck with a fine left foot shot from just outside the area which beat Jonna White in the Blues' goal. The game livened up and there was some ferocious work in midfield and up front by Marc Browning who seemed to be everywhere. This work rate paid off when James Cammage powered through and laid the ball off to Karl Heaven who beat the advancing keeper with a left foot shot.
At 1 – 1 things were going well and the Blues were starting to gain an advantage. The Blues managed to put some pressure on the Clydach goal but without really testing the the keeper.
At the other end Craig Harris did some excellent covering work at the back flicking the ball away from the Clydach forward on the six yard line when a goal was imminent. Clydach against the run of play then took the lead following a goal mouth mêlée with the ball hitting the post before being thumped in to the net by Clydach's Adam Carrington in the 44th minute.
The second half started with Jordan Powell putting the Wasps 3-1 in front before Leigh Carrick stole one back for the Blues.
The next goal was always going to seal the match and it fell for Clydach's Adam Carrington who bagged his brace and his team's fourth with a well placed shot that left White in the Blues goal with no chance.
Clydach finally scored a fifth through the same player who scored their first, James Hapgood, whose excellent volley off a free kick put the game well and truly to bed and his team's name on the cup.
