CLYDACH Wasps gained sweet revenge for their cup final defeat by Govilon with a 3-1 victory over the Gwent County Division One new boys and in doing so picked up their second win in four days.

Yet it was Govilon who started the brighter with Andy Hammett firing just wide from a low cross by Dean Morgan and Rhys Whiteman powering a header straight at Dave Pearce in Clydach's goal.

Govilon also forced a series of free kicks all within the opening ten minutes but to no avail, as Clydach opened the scoring with their first attack - volleying past Morrison in Govilon's goal. There was more drama in the next minute when Clydach were awarded a free kick which they took quickly, taking the visitors by surprise and sliding the ball past Morrison to double their lead.

Govilon fought back immediately with Morgan again finding Hammett whose well struck strike was well saved by Pearce.

Pearce excelled moments later producing a wonder save from Laurent's goal bound header.

This was eclipsed on the half hour mark when Morgan was felled in the box and McCarthy's spot kick was beaten away by Pearce, and Govilon paid for their profligacy when Clydach scored their third as half time approached.

Govilon changed formation at half time moving McCarthy from defence to attack and thought they had reduced arrears when Jamie Laurent's audacious lob from 40 metres almost beat Pearce.

Yet the former rugby district player used all of his frame to tip the ball over the crossbar and it was left to McCarthy to grab a late consolation goal for Govilon as Pearce was finally beaten when the Govilon hitman fired in a spectacular volley in the dying seconds.

Earlier in midweek Govilon fought back from a two nil deficit to earn a two-two draw in front of 140 spectators when they entertained local neighbours Blaenavon Blues.

The Blues struck in the first and second half before Craig Norman's toe poked in on 80 minutes and Dean Morgan grabbed the equaliser two minutes later.

Govilon's Gwent Central League side boosted by the signings of Wyn Evans and Athony Phillips begin their league campaign on Thursday evening with a home fixture against local rivals, Mardy (6.15pm), whilst the Gwent County side travel to face Pentwynmawr Athletic (3.00pm).

ELSEWHERE in Division One, the Blaenavon Blues were undone by the Albion Rovers to the tune of 0-3.
