Two people are in hospital following a serious fire at an Indian restaurant in Monk Street, Abergavenny

One of the main roads through Abergavenny is likely to be closed for much of Saturday following the blaze at an Indian restaurant on Monk Street.

Fire crews were called at 03:26 GMT and rescued three people from an adjoining property.

The A40 Monk Street is closed in both directions between Lower Castle Street and Lion Street because of the blaze.

South Wales Fire and Rescue Service said the "serious fire" is now under control.

At the height of the fire, eight fire engines were at the blaze and crews evacuated nearby properties as they battled to stop the fire spreading.

Police and fire service officers have launched an investigation into the cause of the blaze and several fire engines were still at the scene at midday on Saturday.
