TREASURED photos, kept in a locked box, will safeguard a little girl's memory of her father, Shane Rimmer, who died in a North Yorkshire hospital where he was being detained for assessment. And the ex-partner of Mr Rimmer, who was found hanged at Stockton Hall Hospital, near York, has vowed that their three-year-old daughter, Angel, will be encouraged to cherish his memory. Mr Rimmer, formerly of Parc Craig-Glais, Queen's Road, had been transferred from prison, where he was being held after being charged with the attempted murder of Llyr Jones in October 2004, to Stockton Hall Hospital - a medium secure hospital for patients suffering from mental disorders - for assessment on whether he was fit to stand trial. But he was found dead in the hospital during the evening of Thursday 31 March. Now his ex-partner, Caroline Thomas, of Heol Dinas, Penparcau, has paid tribute to him, explaining how his death has also "taken a huge chunk of her life". For although they had separated some two years ago, he was in regular touch with Caroline and Angel. She said: "Although we had separated we were still best friends. He was in regular contact with Angel - he loved her dearly, and she loved him. If he didn't see us one week for some reason, then he would telephone us. "The shock when I heard that he had died was unbelievable. Now I have good days and bad days. But I'll make sure that Angel, who is a chatterbox just like Shane, never forgets her dad. And I'll do my best to make sure that Angel has as regular contact as possible with her 'Nana' - Shane's mother, Bernadette - and his sister Nicola." A student in the English department of Aberystwyth University, Mr Rimmer came to West Wales from Liverpool in 1998. He had also studied at Lampeter University. Caroline said that Shane had expected to be in Stockton Hall for about another four weeks of assessment. She said: "Nobody will know what came over Shane. It might even have been the distress of not being able to see little Angel - who knows?" • A funeral service is being held at St Anthony of Pajera, Queen's Drive, Liverpool 18 on Friday 22 April (midday).
