The family of a woman from Llanfoist who died following a four-car crash last week have paid tribute to a ‘devoted wife, mother and grandmother’.
Officers from Gwent Police attended a road traffic collision on the A472 in Hafodyrynys at around 12.35pm on Thursday 23 September. The collision involved four cars – a white Nissan Juke, a grey Peugeot 508, a silver Vauxhall Insignia and a Ford Focus which is also a marked police car. The passenger of the Peugeot, a 75-year-old woman, was pronounced dead at the scene. Police have today named her as Norma Ann Morgan from Llanfoist. A 77-year-old man from the Llanfoist area, who was driving the Peugeot, is receiving treatment at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff after sustaining injuries to his arm and back. His condition is stable.
Two Gwent Police officers – a police constable and a community support officer – were travelling in the police car. Both were taken to the University Hospital of Wales for treatment. The police constable has been discharged but the community support officer remains in hospital after sustaining life-changing injuries and her condition is stable.
Two passengers travelling in the Nissan Juke, a 27-year-old woman and a two-year-old girl from the Blaina area, attended the Grange University Hospital in Cwmbran as a precaution for minor injuries. A passenger in the Vauxhall, a 54-year-old woman from the Markham area, received treatment at the scene from paramedics. The family of Norma Ann Morgan has released the following tribute: “Norma was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who will be sorely missed by our family and all who knew her. “This has left an enormous void within our family and we’re trying to come to terms with the sudden loss.
“A retired teacher at Pontypool’s West Monmouth School, she had recently celebrated her 50th wedding anniversary with her husband.
“We would like to take this opportunity to thank all the emergency services for their valiant efforts at the scene of this tragic incident, and our thoughts and prayers are with the families of all those involved.” Her family are being supported by specialist officers and they ask that they are now left alone to grieve in private. Enquiries are ongoing and Gwent Police are asking anyone who was travelling on the A472 in Hafodyrynys between 12.20pm and 12.50pm to get in touch with them. They are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the collision, who has not yet spoken with officers, to get in contact.
