Abergavenny will host the crucial final stage of the Tour of Britain when the premier cycling race rolls through later this year.

The 180km Stage Eight starts in Worcester before snaking through Abergavenny and Usk, before riders break the tape outside City Hall in Cardiff.

Wales has hosted stage of the tour since 2010, this year on Sunday, September 10 being just the fourth time riders will finish outside of London.

A week-long event, the Tour of Britain is one of the sport’s seminal calendar occasions, with a peloton of the cycling elite pushing themselves nearly 800 miles from the Edinburgh start line.

Ken Skates, Welsh Government economy secretary, said the event would put the beauty of the surrounding area on full display.

"I am delighted that this year’s Tour of Britain will be finishing in Wales for the first time,” he said.

“It is a real coup and another excellent opportunity for us to showcase Wales’ unique and beautiful landscape to the world.

The race’s director, Mick Bennett, said cycling’s biggest names will be rolling through Abergavenny and Usk.

“South Wales has a huge cycling community with star names like Geraint Thomas, Luke Rowe and Nicole Cooke all hailing from the area, so it is fitting that Wales gets to host the overall finish of the OVO Energy Tour of Britain for the first time.

“We are really looking forward to bringing the race through Abergavenny once again and have very fond memories of the race there from back in 2014. We got a terrific reception from the whole town and we are looking forward to the same again on 10th September when they get the chance to see the world’s best cyclists right on their doorstep!”

The Tour of Britain takes place between Sunday, September 3 and Sunday, September 10.
