Abergavenny Thursdays - 2
Trelewis - 2
THE Thursdays new signing Andrew Hammet is already making his presence felt at the club after scoring a brace on the weekend against Trelewis.
In their final pre-season friendly, former Neath Athletic player Hammet equalised for his club before inching them into the lead in what was an impressive performance from the Thursdays.
Club secretary Chris Wilkins told the Chronicle, "Although the game ended in a draw it was a very pleasing performance from the players
"There was a little bit of push and shove during the game due to the mistimed tackles resulting from the wet and slippery pitch, but overall we kept a cool head and grinded out a draw.
"In particular the new signings of Matthew Heritage and Paul Pengelly had an exceptional game in midfield and left-back. These pair are still under-18 and have shown the sort of promise that can only develop further as the season progresses.
"Overall it bodes well for our 2008/09 Gwent County Division Three campaign as we kick-off away to Underwood next Saturday.
On a final note Wilkins would like to quash certain rumours that are being bandied around Abergavenny about the club and explained, "For some reason everyone involved with the Thursdays are hearing stories churned out of the local rumour mill about the club being in danger of going under and that the first team players are being paid ten pound a game.
"I would like to take this opportunity to say these rumours are complete nonsense and the club have no idea where these tall tales originate. As a club the Thursdays just want to focus on their football without being hindered by all these needless distractions."
