THE Abergavenny Thursdays heroes of yesteryear turned out in force at Pen-y-Pound last Saturday for a special fixture between the Thursdays veterans and the cup-winning youth side of the early eighties.

Travelling from as far afield as London and Manchester, members of the former youth side flocked back to what was once known in its heyday as the 'Welsh Wembley', and laced up their boots for one more outing on the Pen-y-Pound turf.

The youth team players consisted of Tim Morris (goalkeeper), Carl Walbyoff, Mark Hefferman, Howard Leonard, Darren Roberts, Anthony Brown, Nigel Thomas, Steve Williams, Ady Auraleous, Peter Generalovic, and Dean Monkley.

The youth team dazzled the grizzly veterans after going 2-0 up at half-time, before Thursdays secretary Chris Wilkins claimed one back for the veterans in the second-half.

The day was always going to be on the side of the youth however, as they ended the match 3-1 after strikes from Auraleous, Generalovic, and Monkley.

Club secretary and sole veterans' goal-scorer Chris Wilkins told the Chronicle, "It was a great, well-attended occasion, and it was nice to score a goal. Only after running 40 yards to do it, I didn't really have any energy left to celebrate."
