MONKSWOOD cricket club have crowned a standout season by winning the PD Allen Cup Final against Maesycwmmer.

Played on a beautiful afternoon at Pontnewynydd cricket club, Monkswood won the toss and asked a strong looking Maesycwmmer team to bat.

Maesycwmmer started strongly and after four overs were 30 for no wicket and the ball seemed to be disappearing with alarming regularity to the boundary particularly off the bat of land hander Scott Moore who scored 22.

However when the openers were dismissed in consecutive overs Monkswood took control. Kevin Brooks took two wickets for 19 and man of the match Glyn Watkins four for 18 to rip the heart out of the Maesycwmmer innings, and apart from Marlow who scored an aggressive 20, no other batsman reached double figures and the innings subsided to 84 all out.

As often seems to happen a low total proved difficult to chase and although Greg Tew batted sensibly for 24 the Maesycwmmer bowlers took wickets regularly and the result was in doubt until the last few overs.

Monkswood were indebted to Kevin Brooks who scored 25 and to Simon Bradley who came in and deposited his second ball over the boundary to score the winning runs.

Cup success is the icing on the cake for Monkswood whose first team has achieved promotion this year and the future is certainly rosy for this ambitious club.
