AS was fitting in light of the recent spate of wildfires that have plagued this area, the Green Man didn’t so much as burn brightly this year but mellow softly in the late August sun.

Now in its 24th year, next year is the 25th anniversary; the Green Man is at the “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it” part of its life.

There’s nothing much new to see these days as you wander around the lazy surrounds of Glanusk Park, but familiarity doesn’t always breed contempt; sometimes it’s reassuring.

The ale’s still poured, the food’s still served, and the huge tents such as the Far Out, Chai Wallahs, Babbling Tongues, and the Cinedrome are still inviting. The Ferris wheel still spins, the walled garden still intrigues, and the backdrop to the Mountain Stage is still awe-inspiring.

The Green Man has always been a great festival to walk around and lose yourself in. There’s always something to watch, even if it’s just the sky as you sit beneath one of the great big old trees and admire the landscape.

It’s impossible to separate the Green Man from the setting. They both bleed into one another to create something unique.

Walking around the ramshackle site that combines history, nature, and the nuanced and subtle logistics that go into putting on such an event is a big part of its charm.

And then of course, there’s the music.

Green Man
Don't feed them after dark - it's Mogwai! (Nici Eberl )
Green Man
Back to Church! Or perhaps a dungeon? (Oliver Chapman )
Green Man
It's not Wilko! It's Wilco! (Nici Eberl )
Green Man
It's Baxter Dury! Can you guess who is old man was? (Patrick Gunning )

Many of the acts on the bill may not be everyone’s cup of Growler, but it’s a hot and heady soup of genres.

Put it this way, there’s something for everyone.

Be it old-timers Wilco, delivering a slick, effortless set on the Mountain Stage and showing everyone what a solid back catalogue looks like, or Get Down Services in the Far Tent, showing everyone what men in shorts dancing badly look like.

We had Charlotte Church’s Pop Dungeon giving us a version of Metallica’s Enter Sandman you didn’t know we needed, and Mogwai disappearing in a howl of feedback.

Green Man
Give these boys some crisps! It's Get Down Services (Patrick Gunning )
Green Man
And there was light! And there was Four Tet too! (Patrick Gunning )
Green Man
These guys lit a spark on Sunday, but it was the musical kind so that's ok! (Nici Eberl )
Green Man
Hungry like the wolf with an appetite like Alice! ( Marie Kemacklon )

You had Four Tet bringing the action, the light, and the crowd, and yesterday’s heroes Sparks bringing the theatrics.

Wolf Alice brought the curtain down with a storming set, and that was pretty much that in another Green Man to remember!

Oh! Except the ritual burning was now replaced by a pretty spectacular show of light, movement, and a refreshing lack of smoke!
