One of the cornerstones of the annual Green Man Festival has been cancelled this year due to the extremely high fire risk and government advice.

On Friday night, people from Crickhowell expressed their frustration that the traditional ‘burning of the Green Man’ on the last Sunday of the festival could still be going ahead. As part of the ritual, a massive wooden effigy packed with festivalgoers' written wishes and spells is set ablaze, accompanied by fireworks.

But this afternoon, the festival organisers quashed any speculation that it would go ahead by announcing they would instead have an alternative ‘special send off’ for the wishes made by the thousands set to descend on Glanusk Estate next week.

“Green Man works closely with the fire services and Powys safety teams to ensure everyone’s safety,” a spokesperson for the festival said.

“Please be aware that the ground is extremely dry this year, so we must be vigilant.”

Among the other measures being introduced for everyone’s safety is a complete ban of campfires and disposable barbecues. Charcoal barbecues and stoves placed directly on the ground will be allowed.

Smoking and vaping in all tents and bar areas will be banned this year, free butt boxes for cigarettes will be provided throughout the site.

There will also be more water points than last year and visitors are being urged to fill their water bottles to keep hydrated around the clock. More covered areas will also be provided to provide extra shelter.
