THE Abergavenny Chess Club has finished its 2008/09 season and so ended another successful year.

At the recent annual general meeting of the Gwent County Chess Association, captain of the Abergavenny second team John O' Shea was presented with a trophy to mark his team winning this year's second division competition.

The team will now join the 'A' team in division one for 2010.

The first team narrowly failed to retain their division one championship, finishing runners-up to Cwmbran.

O'Shea was also presented with the Colin Gilbert prize for the best individual performance in division two.

The Abergavenny club continues to grown in membership (with members aged between nine and 79). Subsequently the club will enter a third team to play in the Gwent league next year.

The club holds regular weekly meetings during the season and players of all strengths are invited to visit for a warm welcome and a friendly evening of chess and conversation.
