A GROUP of budding designers have picked up their needles and cotton to help create a giant Welsh dragon.
The students, who are studying textiles at Coleg Gwent's Learn IT Centre in Monmouth, have signed up to take part in the Dragon Project to help raise funds for Ty Hafan Children's Hospice.
As part of the project, the students are designing and making a selection of textile squares in red, black and green to help create the national emblem.
"We're delighted to be taking part in this initiative," said tutor Helen Williams. "Not only will we be helping to raise money for the Ty Hafan Children's Hospice, but the students will be able to put into practice their skills they've learnt on the course.
"Lots of people are taking part in the project and, when completed, the squares will be joined together to form an enormous dragon about the size of a rugby pitch. It's going to be a big challenge, but the students are really looking forward to it."
Student Keeley Williams, 38 from Monmouth said, "We've all been given different colours and designs to work on - being involved in the project is fun and also a chance for us to improve our techniques."
Therese Casemore, 69 from Monmouth added, "I'm really pleased to be involved in the project. I love needlework, and it's great to be using the skills I have learnt for a good cause." Those interested in joining the textile course should contact the Learn IT Centre on (01600) 775564. The course takes place on Mondays between 12.30 and 3pm.
