CAUSING a sensational splash in the world of water is Crickhowell youngster Matthew Jayne who has only been swimming for three years, but is already representing Wales in the deep blue and securing UK National Times in his age-group.

Matthew, who swims for the Abertillery Piranhas, started his aquatic career in Abergavenny where he was spotted by the Abertillery coach three years ago and invited to swim for the Piranhas.

Last year Crickhowell High-School student Matthew qualified to swim for the Welsh Regional squad and is representing his country in a regional tournament in Leeds this May

The weekend before last he swam in the Welsh Age Group Championships held in Swansea and obtained the UK National Time for his 200m freestyle (2.08.79) and 400m freestyle (4.32.45) in the U13 category.

Matthew's recent success entails that he has qualified to swim in the UK National competition which will be held in Sheffield this July - an event he is already training hard for.

Currently Matthew trains eight times per week including one session a week with the Welsh regional squad in Swansea.

Matthew's commitment to his sport includes early morning sessions before school.

Proud dad Paul told the Chronicle, "Myself, my wife Rhian and his sister Abigail are very proud of Matthew's discipline and focus. It is a huge commitment for him but also for all of the family, including his grandparents, to take him training and to the tournaments, but as the results to date prove, it has been very worthwhile."
