A personal trainer is set to run and cycle the length of the British Isles to raise money for physio and prosthetics for his Dad and others like him who have lost limbs.
Ieuan Jones decided to take on the 874-mile challenge after his father Haydn Jones had to have his leg amputated below the knee.
Haydn, who grew up and went to school in Abergavenny before moving to Pontrilas, suffered from kidney failure when he was 24-years-old and since then has had lots of different health issues due to his kidney transplant.
Due to his weakened immune system, Haydn caught Covid and was hospitalised and despite recovering was left with issues to his foot due to a lack of blood supply to his feet which eventually resulted in him having to have his leg amputated below the knee.
With Haydn now recovering from surgery, his family are keen to support him and help him get back to the active lifestyle he enjoyed prior to his hospitalisation.
In order to do that Haydn’s son Ieaun is planning to run and cycle 874 miles from Land’s End to John O’Groats to raise money for physio and house adaptations Haydn will now need as well as raise awareness of the many thousands of people across the UK who lose limbs every day.
Speaking to the Chronicle, Ieaun said: “My Dad has always been an active man, doing a lot of stuff outdoors and he is really keen to get back to that lifestyle following his surgery.
‘‘To do this however he will require lots of physio so I am doing this challenge to raise money for his physio and help provide him with prosthetic limbs.
“In order to raise as much money as I can I decided to run and cycle from Land’s End to John O’Groats in January next year. My plan is to run 30 miles, then cycle 100 miles and repeat this until I finish which I think should take me 14 days.”
Ieaun has already begun training for his epic challenge and has already managed to raise over £1,000 toward his target of £10,000 on his fundraising page.
“My main aim with this challenge is to not only help support my father in his rehabilitation but also to raise money and awareness to help others like him who have lost limbs and to set up a long-standing challenge that can be repeated for years to come to continue raising money and awareness.”
“I understand that the last 18 months have been difficult for many financially so if you can make any donation big or small it would be much appreciated.”
