TREVOR Morgan, who until recently was the town's only surviving Honorary Burgess, passed away peacefully with his family by his side Tuesday morning.
The former councillor, clerk and mayor was remembered fondly as a "real character" and a great ambassador for Abergavenny.
Mr Morgan, who was in his eighties, died Tuesday morning after a long illness.
Former councillor Ray Hill said he gained all his experience from Mr Morgan, "I met him when I was mayor in 1983/84 and he taught me everything.
"He is going to be missed by everyone. He did a good job. He was a borough councillor for the town, mayor and Monmouth borough chairman. He was then Clerk of Abergavenny Town Council for more than 10 years.
"He was very helpful and he never turned anyone away. To me he was outstanding - he was one of the best."
Mr Morgan, who was president of the Abergavenny Senior Citizens was described by the mayor, councillor Douglas Edwards as a real character.
"I'm very sad to hear that. He will be sadly missed. He was of the special generation, brought up in the town, lived in the town and certainly had good knowledge of the community.
"His wife Vera always supported him and the council and everyone had great respect for them both."
